Qualcomm brings WiFi 7 to your home with its new 10G technology: you’ll download as fast as with a cable

WiFi 7 is expected to arrive just before mid-2024, bringing a significant advance in download and upload speeds to any home equipped with this technology. Qualcomm is one of the key players, as it has just introduced its next-generation 10 Gigabit (10G) fiber bandwidth service to bring this new solution to any home.

Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled its Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform and its Qualcomm Service Defined Wi-Fi technology. In most homes, network access from the service provider and WiFi are managed separately. Maintaining a consistent quality of service across the network is virtually impossible due to the variety of devices, applications, connectivity technologies, and their constant evolution.

Qualcomm’s new service addresses this management challenge by offering an architecture that unifies all data flows from the cloud to the device. In other words, it handles structuring, classification, scheduling, and insights to help the average user access 10G fiber with ease. This way, all connection needs for gaming, streaming, video calls, or content sharing are more than adequately met.

According to Andrew Spivey, a senior analyst at ABI Research, this Qualcomm innovation will completely transform home WiFi connectivity. With the rapid deployment of fiber alongside the decline of current DSL technologies, the new platform, combined with Qualcomm’s WiFi 7, will deliver the advanced speeds currently needed for homes.

How does it work?

The Qualcomm 10G Fiber Gateway Platform technology is designed to enable 10Gbps connections in homes. Software development combines 10G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology with multi-Gigabit WiFi 7 connectivity to ensure high-speed, low-latency connectivity across end devices such as mobiles, PCs, Smart TVs, security cameras, and various applications.

Qualcomm’s Service Defined Wi-Fi technology will allow providers to create a new level of user experience based on fast and efficient connectivity. In fact, this technology will enable providers to offer different services optimized for applications like gaming, streaming, or supporting the work-from-home experience.

Qualcomm has announced that both technologies are scheduled for commercial availability by the summer of 2024. This will result in speeds up to four times faster than current connections through a WiFi 6 router. WiFi 7 will exponentially increase that speed, with advantages like data prioritization based on household members’ needs.
