Nobody. Absolutely nobody. The people in your house when they hear you turn on the PlayStation: What are you doing? The sound of Sony consoles starting up has been a subject of global debate since the days of the PlayStation 3. Who hasn’t experienced wanting to start playing at odd hours, without drawing attention or being disturbed, only to activate that “beep” sound that alerts the entire neighborhood? Well, 17 years later, you can finally get rid of it.
The latest update of PS5 allows you to put an end to the startup sound, the beeping that pierced through reinforced concrete walls and seemed to broadcast our location to satellites and extraterrestrials. The new beta version of the console (which we previously reported all its novelties) includes an option in the settings to disable any noise and become as silent as a ninja when going to play.
The new beta version of the console comes just weeks after Sony’s plans with PlayStation 5 were leaked. According to Tom Henderson, who is usually accurate with these things, the company is preparing a pro version of the console that supports 8K and accelerated ray tracing. It has been in development since 2022 and is expected to be released in November 2024.
Henderson claims that the development kits will start reaching studios by the end of this year, and the main goal is to improve the frame rate without sacrificing 4K resolution. To provide some context, the PS4 was released on November 29, 2013, and received a Slim and a Pro version in 2016, three years later. Considering that the PS5 was launched in 2020, Sony seems to be taking it more leisurely this time.
In any case, the true next-generation feature is being able to disable the beep and not wake up the whole house every time we go to play.
