Activision has shown little concern about the state of the older Call of Duty installments. The multiplayer aspect of many titles released by the company in the first half of the 2010s or earlier has faced numerous issues. Players have reported cheating, insecurity, and even errors that made finding a match literally impossible. That’s why some members of the community have shown so much interest in fan projects that have recently been shut down by the company. However, something has just changed in the overall situation of the old CoD games.
Call of Duty fans have reported the arrival of an update that affects all the company’s games available on Xbox 360 (from 2015 and older). All the titles available on this console have received a patch that restores their online matchmaking tools. Until now, it was only possible to play online using private matches, which made it nearly impossible for players to enjoy the game. Now, thanks to the change, fans have a reason to dust off their old console and revisit some of the most popular entries in the Activision saga.
The curious thing about the update is the timing of its release. The patch came just hours after the US justice system approved the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. It’s worth noting that Microsoft is the owner of the company. However, many users believe that there is a correlation between this patch and the approval of the acquisition. Although the new Call of Duty games won’t arrive on Game Pass until 2025, it is expected that the older installments will join the service as soon as Xbox takes control, making their functionality relevant again. “It’s like tidying up your house before guests arrive,” one player said.
The situation regarding Microsoft and Activision is still uncertain. Although the operation is closer to a successful closure than ever before, the FTC could still appeal the decision and delay the acquisition. Additionally, Xbox executives need to resolve their situation in the United Kingdom. In any case, players have already benefited from the ability to return to the old entries in the franchise. If their arrival on Game Pass is also confirmed, there’s no doubt that many of these Call of Duty games would become, at least temporarily, the most popular games on the service.
