While it’s true that this rumor has been circulating on the internet for years, all signs point to Nintendo preparing for its next generation. And we’re not just talking about the hypothetical Nintendo Switch 2, a device that has given rise to numerous speculations, but also changes in the current developments of the Japanese company. Because, although we still don’t know what the future holds with the Big N, we now know that their strategy involves definitively shelving Mario Kart Tour.
The title, exclusive to Android and iOS mobile devices, has been receiving updates since its release back in 2019. However, it seems that Nintendo wants to shift its focus and, as a result, has surprised Mario Kart Tour players with a message confirming the end of content updates. “Starting from October 4, 2023 (Wednesday), tours will consist of tour content that has appeared before. Note: No new courses, drivers, karts, or gliders will be added after the Battle Tour that begins on October 4, 2023 (Wednesday),” reads the message shared by OatmealDome on Twitter.
As you can imagine, players will still be able to enjoy Mario Kart Tour after the date mentioned in Nintendo’s announcement; the only change is that developers will no longer introduce new features to the gaming experience. Ultimately, Nintendo has been adding a good amount of content to the racing title, including a curious version of Madrid that incorporates settings such as torrijas, churros, a tablao, and flamenco.
Many have interpreted this message as an internal restructuring within Nintendo’s offices. It seems that some users theorize about the possibility that Nintendo has decided to move many developers from Mario Kart Tour to projects destined for the supposed Nintendo Switch 2, such as a Mario Kart 9, the existence of which has not yet been confirmed. Either way, the company seems to be working hard on its next generation of consoles, and it is said that some lucky individuals have already seen this mysterious device in a closed-door presentation during Gamescom 2023.
