From the moment it hit the market, Betrayer stood out as a unique game within its genre. Positioned as a first-person survival shooter with an interesting story that transported us to 1604 Virginia, plagued with ghosts, monsters, and other strange creatures, it was eventually removed from Steam in 2021 without many details. Blackpowder Games’ work ended up buried on Valve’s platform, despite its interesting proposition of classic exploration-based gameplay. Two years later, GOG has picked up the game and made it free in their catalog. There is currently no time limit to claim the game, but we recommend getting it as soon as possible to avoid surprises.
Here you can get Betrayer for free on GOG: All you have to do is add the game to your cart and proceed to acquire and download it.
Although GOG has released Betrayer for free, the game is still not available on Steam, and there doesn’t seem to be any news about it in the near future. The Blackpowder Games team, formed by former Monolith Productions employees, has not made any statements regarding this matter either. In any case, the game has a distinctive artistic style with a dark color palette that highlights red tones, as if constantly displaying the contrast of Schindler’s List with the appearance of the girl in the red coat. Its gameplay is slightly slower as it offers a survival adventure set in the early days of colonial America.
Using different types of weapons such as bows, crossbows, or rifles, players must confront all kinds of spooky creatures while exploring vast environments to obtain rewards. The color palette can be customized according to our preferences, although the experience is better lived with the dark tone proposed from the beginning.
Certainly, at Vandal, we reviewed this unique FPS at the time, and unfortunately, its proposition didn’t convince us much: “Betrayer is not a bad game, and we appreciate the attempt to offer something different, but its offering won’t satisfy many players who are captivated by its aesthetics. If you’re thinking of buying it, we encourage you to read this analysis carefully and fully understand it, and even check other players’ opinions, as it is unique in both the good and the bad. In short, Betrayer offers a universe with many aspects worth exploring, but its experience is unfortunately diminished by shallow gameplay depth and mechanics that could have been better implemented.”
