The new Motorola Edge 50 Pro is official: 125 W charging and a Pantone color screen to impress

Motorola has announced its new mid-range phone, the Edge 50 Pro, which stands out for its cutting-edge technical features.

Unless you buy a high-end mobile phone, it’s inevitable that you’ll have to make sacrifices; and it’s very rare to get the best of the best. That’s going to change in 2024, which will be one of the best years to buy a mid-range device.

The new Motorola phone seems to be one of those devices that could be convincing. The new Edge 50 Pro is a model that shows promise, just by looking at the list of components used; this should make it an alternative worth considering, especially if you want a cutting-edge mobile.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is based on Qualcomm’s new processor for mid-range phones, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. It stands out for its jump in energy efficiency and performance, which is already usual with each generation; but this time, the performance improvement in AI is the main feature, and Motorola has taken full advantage of it.

Specifically, the Edge 50 Pro leverages the AI capabilities of the Snapdragon processor to become the first Motorola phone with AI-enhanced photography. This technology will optimize the capture of moving subjects and color segmentation; all this should translate into photographic improvements, even though the sensors have not changed much compared to the Edge 40 Pro (and have actually worsened slightly).

The main camera of the Edge 50 Pro continues to use a 50 Mpx sensor, now with an f/.14 aperture, maintaining laser autofocus and optical stabilization. It is accompanied by a 13 Mpx wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture, and a telephoto lens that is now 3x instead of the 2x of its predecessor.

Indeed, photography is one of the areas where Motorola was lagging behind, especially compared to rivals in the same price range like the Google Pixel. So, it’s good to see that Motorola is leveraging AI to catch up, not just in photography but also in the software aspect.

The Edge 50 is the first model to debut the Hello UI interface, based on Android 14, with integrated AI functions. For example, it can generate unique wallpapers for the mobile. It is also the model that will debut the new Smart Connect platform, which allows connecting mobiles, tablets, and computers from the Motorola and Lenovo brands; this way, we can do things like turn the tablet into a second screen for the PC and access data and files between devices.

Technically, the Motorola Edge 50 is based on a high-resolution pOLED screen (1220p) and a high refresh rate (144 Hz); it also stands out for its maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, which brings it closer to more expensive mobiles. Perhaps even more striking is that this is the first mobile screen with Pantone validated colors, certifying that it displays colors and skin tones in a realistic and faithful manner.

Lastly, the fast charging reaches a power of no less than 125W, in addition to being compatible with 50W wireless charging; all this to recharge a 4,500 mAh battery. The Motorola Edge 50 does not yet have a price, but we expect it to be revealed very soon.
