Samsung has just refreshed its top-of-the-line mobile series with the new S24. Of course, the most advanced phone in this family is the Samsung S24 Ultra, one that comes with several important innovations, both in terms of design and features, as well as Artificial Intelligence. However, this phone adopts and shares many of the technical specifications and functions of the S22 Ultra, one of its closest predecessors. Having already seen how different it is from the S23 Ultra in this comparison, let’s now look at the differences between the Samsung S24 Ultra vs S22 Ultra. To do this, we’ll analyze all the features of both phones, as well as their prices. Only then will we know which one is better and why. Let’s see.

Designs and screens without many changes

Samsung S24 Ultra - 01

Samsung is a fairly conservative firm when it comes to choosing the designs of its phones. Therefore, the new Galaxy S24 Ultra doesn’t change much compared to the S22 Ultra. With both phones, we have very similar designs, if not identical, so at first glance, it can be somewhat difficult to distinguish them. Of course, there are subtle differences, mainly in the finish.

While the Samsung S24 Ultra has titanium frames, those of the S22 Ultra are aluminum. On the back of both, however, we find glass. Now, on the side edges of the S24 Ultra, we have less curvature, since its screen is completely flat, unlike that of the Samsung S22 Ultra, which is curved and, therefore, has more rounded edges. Now, otherwise, they have the same camera layout, as well as a punch-hole display.

Now, about the screens, we have just two differences between the Samsung S24 Ultra vs S22 Ultra. The first one is found in the glass that covers them, which on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is Gorilla Glass Armor, one of Corning’s most advanced and resistant to date. In the S22 Ultra, on the other hand, we have Gorilla Glass Victus+, one less resistant to scratches, but which still performs very well. In this sense, it’s also worth noting that the screen of the S24 Ultra is less reflective than that of the S22 Ultra, which is appreciated. This helps to better visualize the content, especially outdoors, where there can be a lot of reflection due to excessive lighting.

The second difference that both phones have in terms of screens has to do with the maximum brightness they can achieve, which in the Samsung S24 Ultra is 2,600 nits and in the S22 Ultra is 1,750 nits. That is, the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is about 50% brighter than that of the S22 Ultra.

Otherwise, both the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra have a diagonal of 6.8 inches, boast a QuadHD+ resolution of 3,088 x 1,440 pixels, are of LTPO Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, and have an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz that can vary between 1 Hz and 120 Hz. In addition, they have a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz and are compatible with HDR10+.

Processors: top in performance and power

Samsung S22 Ultra - 01

As it could not be otherwise, the Samsung S24 Ultra and S22 Ultra come with two of the most powerful processors of the moment. Although, of course, one, being newer than the other, boasts a more advanced chipset. This is the S24 Ultra, the one that has Qualcomm’s most powerful processor to date, which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The S22 Ultra, on the other hand, comes with one processor or another, depending on the market. In Europe, for example, it comes with the Exynos 2200, while in China and the United States, as well as in other regions, it comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has better performance, and this is reflected when opening and running demanding graphics applications and games, where it achieves greater speed, stability, and fluidity than the S22 Ultra. But this phone is not only more powerful because of its processor, but also because it has internal memory that boasts a higher read and write speed. In question, it has one of UFS 4.0 type, unlike the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has one of UFS 3.1. Now, about the internal storage space options, both come in variants of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB, but only the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is also offered with one of 128 GB.

Now, regarding the RAM, both have 12 GB of LPDDR4 type, but only the S22 Ultra is also available with 8 GB. In turn, neither has a microSD slot to expand internal memory.

Cameras and videos, where we have similar bets

Samsung S24 Ultra - 02

Now we will talk about the cameras of both, something that we cannot ignore in this comparison of the Samsung S24 Ultra vs S22 Ultra, as it is one of the sections where they stand out the most.

Here the Samsung S24 Ultra is better than the S22 Ultra, and it is for several reasons. To begin with, it has a main camera with higher resolution, which is 200 megapixels and has an aperture of f/1.7. That of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is 108 megapixels and has an aperture of f/1.8. This sensor, in addition, can record in 8K resolution at 30 frames per second, while that of the S22 Ultra records in 8K at 24 frames per second.

Likewise, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a better periscope, being of higher resolution. This is 50 megapixels and has an aperture of f/3.4. However, it has taken a step back in optical zoom, as it has one of 5X. Let’s remember that that of the S22 Ultra is 10X, double, although its resolution is 10 megapixels and its aperture is f/4.9. Similarly, although this lens has less optical zoom, Samsung compensates for it with better image processing – supported by Artificial Intelligence -, which promises photos with similar or even superior quality.

Then we have the last two photographic sensors, which in both phones are a 10-megapixel telephoto with an aperture of f/2.4 and 3X optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel wide-angle with an aperture of f/2.2.

The front camera of the Samsung S24 Ultra is 12 megapixels and that of the S22 Ultra is 40 megapixels. However, both have an aperture of f/2.2 and can record video in 4K at a rate of 60 frames per second.

Batteries, connectivity, and other features

Samsung S22 Ultra - 02

In this comparison of the Samsung S22 Ultra vs S24 Ultra, it is also important to see the batteries of both phones to define which one is better, but here we find no difference, since both have the same 5,000 mAh battery with support for 45 W fast charging, 15 W wireless charging, and 4.5 W reverse charging. Of course, neither includes its original charger in the box; this must be purchased separately, which can entail an extra cost.

In terms of connectivity, both are very similar, except for two details. The first is that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with Wi-Fi 7, while the S22 Ultra has Wi-Fi 6e. The second is related to the Bluetooth version, which in the S24 Ultra is v5.3 and in the S22 Ultra is v5.2. Otherwise, both have GPS with A-GPS and Glonass, support for 5G and 4G LTE networks, NFC for contactless mobile payments, and a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 1 port.

Other features that both phones share are an ultrasonic fingerprint reader on-screen, stereo speakers signed by AKG compatible with Dolby Atmos, facial recognition, and IP68 water resistance, making them submersible. They also come with an S Pen stylus. In addition, they boast an internal cooling system by means of a vapor chamber. However, that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra 5G is more advanced, since it has a larger vapor chamber that promises to control the internal temperature of the phone more efficiently, thus avoiding it from overheating more easily. The other thing is that this one comes with different Artificial Intelligence features, such as real-time call translation, web page summaries… Here we test them.

Both also come with Android 14 under One UI 6. However, the software update support is different for each. While the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was launched with 4 years of OS updates, the S24 Ultra comes with 7 years of updates. Since the S22 Ultra was released in 2022 with Android 12, it will be upgradable to Android 16; that is, it has two Android updates left. The S24 Ultra, on the other hand, as it arrived with Android 14, will be upgradable to Android 21, an update that will arrive on this phone in late 2030 or early 2031.

Prices, conclusions, and opinion: comparison of Samsung S24 Ultra vs S22 Ultra, which one is better?

We have already analyzed all the differences between the Samsung S22 Ultra vs S24 Ultra. Now we have to define which of the two is better, but not before taking a look at their prices, because here we have one more difference, and not necessarily a small one.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has an official launch price of around 1,460 euros, while the S22 Ultra can be purchased in 2024 for just over 800 euros, as it has dropped in price over the last two years. This means that the S24 Ultra is almost 700 euros more expensive than the S22 Ultra.

Now, about which one is better, it is expected that the Samsung S24 Ultra will be, but only if we talk about features and designs, because, in terms of value for money, the S22 Ultra is a more interesting option today, not only because it is cheaper, but also because it shares many of the characteristics that the aforementioned S24 Ultra has.

Taking this into account, we can say that the S24 Ultra is better for several reasons. Not only does it have a more refined design, with a flat screen and aluminum frames, but it also comes with a more powerful processor that offers a faster and smoother user experience in all kinds of situations. Its screen, in addition, is much brighter and is protected by a more resistant glass. It also improves in the photographic section, but, more than anything, because of its image processing, which is optimized by Artificial Intelligence to achieve better results both in photos and in videos. And speaking of AI, we have to say that it comes with a bunch of interesting features, although many of these -possibly all- will also eventually come to the S22 Ultra.

On the other hand, the S24 Ultra has a better internal cooling system, better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a much more generous update support that promises Android 21 in the future, something to consider if you want a phone with the latest software for many years.
