When the next Galaxy Unpacked event takes place at the end of next July, Samsung will have little new to show for the Spanish market. Almost all the expected innovations for the event are already appearing on social media and online media.
Like last year’s event around the same time, the spotlight will be on the new generation of Samsung’s foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 may not be revolutionary, but they are expected to remain the industry’s reference in terms of displays, performance, and premium experience.
The latest leak is perhaps the most comprehensive so far, revealing the design of the new devices, the innovations, and what will remain unchanged compared to the current generation. Depending on the preferred model, it may not be worth upgrading just yet.
The leak comes from SnoopyTech, who obtained rendered images of the new models in various colors. These images appear to be official Samsung renders used in promotional material and for the press, which somehow ended up in the wrong hands (at least from Samsung’s perspective). Therefore, the final products should be identical to what is seen in these photos.
These images confirm what we feared: the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will bear a striking resemblance to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which in turn was very similar to its predecessor. While other manufacturers have played with different screen proportions, Samsung has decided to continue with taller screens than usual, especially noticeable on the narrower external display. The interior screen, on the other hand, appears to have very slim bezels, which could be the biggest technical innovation of this device.
Both screens will have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, variable on the inside display (capable of lowering to 1 Hz to save battery). The interior display will be a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED with a resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels, while the exterior display will be a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED with a resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels. The camera setup will be identical in appearance and features, with a 50 MP main sensor, a 12 MP ultra-wide, and a 12 MP telephoto lens. The selfie camera will be 10 MP, with a 4 MP under-display camera on the inside. The device will have a 4400 mAh battery and IPX8 water resistance thanks to the hinge design.
As for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, a crucial difference from the Z Flip 4 is expected: a significantly larger external display measuring 3.4 inches, capable of competing with models like the Motorola Razr 40. The external display will even allow for using certain apps without needing to open the device, and it is expected that some Google apps like Maps will be specially adapted to this second screen.
In the last few hours, we’ve been able to see what this second screen will look like in real life, with a photo taken of a test device that uses a case to prevent revealing more details than necessary. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the screen is much larger and more usable.
The interior display of the Z Flip 5 will be 6.7 inches with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels. It will feature two rear cameras positioned in one corner of the screen: a 12 MP main camera and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera. Both foldables will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, currently the most powerful processor available for Android.
